What Is Biblical Counselling?

By Dr. Hannelie du Toit

What Is Biblical Counselling?

Biblical counselling is the ministry of coming alongside another person to help them understand their life and struggles through the lens of God's Word. It is not simply giving advice or quoting verses, but patiently helping someone see who God is, who they are, and what hope the gospel offers in their particular situation.

More than problem-solving

Where many approaches aim only to relieve symptoms, biblical counselling addresses the heart. It assumes that lasting change happens from the inside out as the Holy Spirit renews our thinking, our desires, and our worship. Scripture becomes the map that helps us make sense of pain, sin, suffering, and growth.

Built on grace and truth

Good counselling holds together two things that can feel opposite: honest truth about our struggles and unwavering grace toward the struggler. Jesus modelled this perfectly — full of grace and truth. A biblical counsellor listens carefully, asks gentle questions, and gradually points the person back to Christ as the source of their healing and identity.

Whether you are walking through anxiety, grief, conflict, or simply seeking to grow, biblical counselling reminds you that you are not alone, and that God's Word speaks with relevance and tenderness into the real details of your life.
